Mel Gavin registered with Sligo Volunteer Centre in March after COVID restrictions hit. He ended up volunteering with Easkey Meals on Wheels service soon after. Mel travels out from Sligo Town to do this, and continues with his role today.
Here are a few questions that Sligo Volunteer Centre asked Mel about his volunteering.
Why did you decide to volunteer as a Meals on Wheels volunteer during COVID 19?
- At the start of the Covid-19 crisis I think everyone wanted to do something to help others. This was something simple that I knew I could do.
How did you get involved?
- I signed up to a newsletter with volunteersligo.ie and just kept an eye on opportunities as they came up.
What role do you do?
- I drive the Meals on Wheels vans on a few weekend days to deliver the dinners.
What did you get out of it?
- Honestly at the start it was during the first lockdown, so it was really nice to get beyond the 2km limit from home. My wife joined me and it felt like we were on holiday. But also I’m really happy to help a local organisation like Meals on Wheels that are a valuable resource for the community.
