The HSE released a call to protect its frontline workers in the fight against Covid-19 and ITSligo put together a project team with a request for volunteers to IT Sligo Staff.

In total, 120 volunteers supported the Visor Project, a cross functional team deriving from the functions of President’s Office, the Contract Research Unit, Engineering & Design, Science, The  Research Office, and our Students Union.

IT Sligo manufactured 3 types of visors and 12,000 visors were produced and distributed across the region. IT Sligo collaborated with the HSE on both a National scale and Regional scale. A secondary supply of visors was distributed directly to local Nursing homes both Private and Public, Carer Associations, Chime Deaf Society, Garda Stations, GP Practices, Vets, Pharmacies, local Ambulance Services and local Authorities across the Northwest., Western regions, Midlands and East of the Country.

IT Sligo worked closely with our local Community Services, Sligo County Council and Sligo PPN for the distribution of our face-shields, and with the help of our local HSE, Guards, Local Authorities and Order of Malta-Carrick on Shannon, the face-shields got to the areas they were needed most. We also worked closely with the HSE to source Surgical Gowns and Surgical Masks on their behalf.

In response to Covid-19 and in conjunction with our colleagues at Sligo University Hospital and our colleagues in Limerick and Clare, IT Sligo designed and prototyped Ventilators. The project was spearheaded by colleagues from Faculty of Engineering & Design. It was one of the first working prototypes of its kind in Ireland. The design of our Ventilators is currently available on Open Source.

Finally, we co-designed with the help of our local Garda a Visor Clip which will ensure the safety of our Guards in these challenging times.
